Is early November too soon to start thinking about Christmas (or whichever holiday you and yours celebrate)? Not in my book, at least when it comes to planning which gifts to give to your favorite people. Christmas is one of my favorite times on year, despite winter in general being my absolute least favorite. It’s a beacon of warmth and light in the cold and dark of the season, and a source of anticipation, joy and nostalgia every year. I have fond memories (and many pictures – thanks Dad!) of sitting at the top of the stairs with my sister on Christmas morning, giddy beyond belief and in impatient disbelief that our mom was usually still in bed. Years later we’d learn she was exhausted every Christmas because she’d stay up into the wee hours the night before staging a magical scene for the two of us. The fireplace screen would be askew, bites would be missing from the carrots and cookies we’d left for Santa and his reindeer, and all our packages would be wrapped in different paper than the family presents under the tree, proving they couldn’t possibly be from anyone but Santa himself!
Even though Santa no longer visits my parents’ house, gift giving is still a Christmas morning tradition of ours and one of my favorite parts of the holiday. P and I started talking Christmas gifts already last month because we so love finding the right gift for everyone on our list; nothing warms my heart like seeing a grown adult gleeful over that perfect present! This month I’ll be sharing some easy DIY gift ideas, and I’ll be starting December with a gift guide (with Bisou’s help) for all the cats and humans on your list.
Let’s start things off with my new favorite pair of DIY earrings (to wear and to gift!) for anyone on your list who appreciates the handmade, the creative, the sparkly things in life. They remind me a little of the big, gold clip on earrings my grandma wore, but are a more modern and refined take on over the top costume jewelry. You don’t need any jewelry making tools or experience to pull these off. Really, all you need is about three minutes, and if round, brassy baubles aren’t your thing, feel free to make them in another shape or color! The possibilities are endless.
I initially started browsing metal stamping blanks thinking I could make Bisou a fancy collar tag. I abandoned that idea, but ordered some anyway to make the simplest earrings of all time. I picked some small gold blanks; I love how they catch the light without being overly shiny. If that’s not your (or your gift recipient’s) thing though, they come in a multitude of shapes and sizes. Hearts, flags, state shapes, you name it. They’re readily available in copper and silver, too! You can find them in your local bead supply store or on Etsy and as far as jewelry goes, they are very reasonably priced. All you need to turn them into earrings are some earring posts and backs (from any craft store) and some super glue. I promised it would be crazy easy! Bonus points for decorating some card stock with a little calligraphy or some water colors to hold the earrings. As usual, I’d love to hear how they turn out!
- metal stamping blanks (tip: purchase finished/deburred blanks that are ready to use)
- earring posts and backs
- super glue
- Simply glue the earring back onto the backside of the stamping blank and hold until glue sets. Keep in mind where the blank will sit relative to the wearer's ear. You may want to position the earring back at the top of the blank rather than the middle. Done!
