Homemade Cat Pizza

Cat Pizza by Kayleigh KosmasBisou is always a sweetheart but this past week she’s been extra attentive, staying by my side around the clock while I’ve been laid up with a sprained back. I’ve gotten behind on work and chores but it’s hard to feel bad about my lack of productivity when all that time’s been spent bonding with my girl! Food is Bisou’s love language, so I made her an extra special treat to show her how much she means to me: a cat pizza!!!

Cat Pizza by Kayleigh KosmasThe crust is borrowed from my cat cookie recipe, but instead of topping the potato starch and canned food base with cookie chips, I added a bunch of savory cat bites. Catnip takes the place of the spinach I’d throw on a human pizza, kibbles look like tiny pieces of sausage and the bonito flakes are like crispy strips of bacon! Since the pizza was made exclusively of things Bisou loves, I knew I wouldn’t have any trouble getting her to eat a slice. I did not, however, predict just how much she’d love it! She probably would have eaten the whole pie, crust and all, if I’d let her. Read on if you want to see Bisou nibbling on a pizza slice – cutest thing ever! Continue Reading

Adventures with Bisou

Bisou- A Day in the Life by Kayleigh Kosmas-2Most of you have seen Bisou on the blog and on Instagram before – I’ve posted recipes for her favorite snacks and her white mitten paws pop up in my images all the time. I figured it was time to devote a whole post to Bisou and share just why I love her so much that I bake cookies and knit beds for her. You see, Bisou is much more than a pet or a companion. Bisou is a member of the family. Bisou is my hero. She keeps our household running, protects us from invaders (read: bugs!) and even supervises my cooking. It’s a lot of work for a cat, but Bisou’s heroic efforts are what keep us going! Read on to see what a typical day is like for Bisou and me, and don’t forget to visit STAINMASTER® to read more inspiring stories about hero pets!

Homemade Cat Cookies (They’re Grain-free!)

Homemade Cat Cookies (Grain-free!) by Kayleigh KosmasIf you’ve been following along with me on Instagram, you’ve already heard me talk about the foot of snow and ice we’ve been buried under for the past week. This latest storm was somewhat unexpected, and we weren’t exactly prepared in the food department. We started to run out of fruits and veggies and eventually trekked to the grocery store, which is serious business in a city that doesn’t plow its streets or de-ice them before a big storm! I wasn’t sure when we’d make it to the store again, so I loaded up on everything I’d been craving: bananas, yogurt, flour, eggs, chocolate! Okay, it was mostly baking ingredients. One of my cooking goals this year is to develop sugar-free recipes for classics like chocolate chip cookies and a snow day seemed like the perfect time to get started. My first attempt came out fairly well, but it’ll take a few more passes before the recipe’s ready to share. The cat version I made for Bisou, on the other hand, turned out blog-worthy on my first try! So, here you go, grain-free chewy chip cookies for your cat.

Homemade Cat Cookies (Grain-free!) by Kayleigh Kosmas

These adorable, cat-friendly morsels are topped with some chopped treats that look sort of like chocolate chips, making them extra tasty and extra cute if I do say so. They’re Bisou’s l-lysine supplements; you can find them at any pet store. The cookies only take five minutes to bake, and even less time for your kitty to inhale them. If I’d left her to her own devices, Bisou would literally have swallowed them all whole. Watching her pick up a whole cookie between her tiny teeth and carry it away is one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen, but I didn’t want her to choke; hand feeding them to her one cat-sized bite at a time was still pretty darn cute. Next time I bake my sugar-free cookies I hope they come out like these: soft, chewy and the perfect golden color. If you bake some for your cat, I hope she enjoys them as much as Bisou does! Happy Birthday Bisou! + How to Bake a Cat Cake

How to Bake a Cat Birthday Cake | Crafts and a Cat by Kayleigh KosmasBisou turned four years old on December 1, or sometime thereabouts. Since Bisou is a rescue cat, we’re not sure of her exact birthday, but December 1, 2013 was the day she turned up at the humane society looking about a year old, so it’s the day we’ve celebrated each year since then. I can’t believe she’s been with me three years. On one hand, the time has flown by, but on the other, so much has changed since then it seems like much longer. Just days after I adopted Bisou, we met her dad/my future husband. P and I have since gotten engaged and married, he’s finished grad school and started a challenging career in education, and I’ve started working as a photographer. Bisou has been the center of our universe through it all, and it’s entirely thanks to her that I’ve embarked on this career path. She’s my muse and favorite subject, and the feedback my lovely readers gave me on early pictures of Bisou gave me the drive to hone my craft. All in all, I owe a lot of the best things in my life to Bisou, so I decided to show her how much I adore her by baking her a kitty sized birthday cake.

How to Bake a Cat Birthday Cake | Crafts and a Cat by Kayleigh KosmasThe cake is incredibly simple to make, and your cat is sure to love it because their favorite wet food is the main ingredient! All it takes is three ingredients and some catnip sprinkles for decoration. Bisou and I were anxious to get the cake out of the pan – to eat it and to start shooting it, respectively – and I didn’t let it cool down enough, so it came out a bit dented and lopsided. Bisou didn’t seem to mind though, and if you’re more patient than us you should end up with a perfectly formed little cat cake! The texture was dense yet fluffy and spongey, just as cake should be. It’s soft enough that it’s nice and easy for cats to pull apart with their teeth if you let yours dig in to a whole cake. Give it a try for your cat’s next birthday or special occasion, and let us know how it turns out!

The 2016 Crafts and a Cat Gift Guide

Crafts and a Cat Gift Guide | Kitchen, Home and Pantry by Kayleigh Kosmas

Picking, wrapping and giving gifts is my favorite part of the holiday season, tied with eating all the tasty food that abounds, so it was only natural that I’d put together a gift guide for the year. I’m so excited to share this selection of gifts with you, each so charming, one of a kind and quality made I’ll be gifting them to my own nearest and dearest*. I’m confident each one will delight its recipient, and in many cases become a new heirloom to be treasured and shared for years to come. Bisou pawpicked some of her very favorite items that she’s sure the cats (and cat parents) on your list will adore, and I’ve rounded up my favorite home wares, kitchen staples and beauty obsessions that I love not just because they’re beautiful and functional, but because of the hard working and dedicated folks behind them.

It’s easy to fall into the big box store trap when it comes to gift shopping, especially when your list is long and during the holidays there are a million other things to do. But what better time to support small businesses and the talented craftspeople who put in long hours this time of year so you can gift their wares to the people you love? I’m making it extra easy to support family- and women-owned businesses, makers who lovingly handcraft every item they sell, and brands committed to responsible and animal-friendly practices by including some of my favorites here.

*To my closest family and friends: avert your eyes now, or there could be spoilers. You’ve been warned! To everyone else, read on for our favorite picks for all the cats and human people on your list and watch in amazement as your gift shopping pretty much does itself this year!
